Rules and Regulations

Running the Contest

 

 

A raised platform is not compulsory; however, it is strongly recommended. The use of notes, amplification, lectern or speaker’s stand by contestants or prompting in any manner is NOT permitted. Props are NOT permitted.
The use of any type of electronic/digital data gathering, receiving and/or transmitting equipment in any form by contestants or members of the audience is prohibited.
The time allotted for each contestant to deliver their Prepared Oration shall not be less than eight (8) or more than ten (10) minutes and for the Assigned Topic, not less than three (3) or more than five (5) minutes.

 

 

 

 

The Contest Schedule

 

 

In December, each American Legion Post may offer a local contest among the students of their schools.  There are monetary incentives for students and coaches at this level, as determined by each Post.

In January, at the District level, students compete between the posts in each region.  There are monetary incentives for students and coaches at this level, as determined by each Post.

In February, at the Regional level, students from various districts compete for the opportunity to advance to States.  Cash awards at this level are $325 for 1st place, and $100 for the next two runners-up.

On March 28-29, at the State Conference, the representatives for the four Regions will vie for the slot to the National Conference.  Cash awards at this level are $1,100 for 1st pace, and $600 for the next two runners-up.

On April 4-6, representatives from each state compete at the National Conference in Indianapolis.  For advancing to each preliminary rounds, competitors gain a $1,500 scholarship.  Winners of the National Tournament receive scholarships of $18,000, $16,000, and $14,000.
