The American Legion
Oratorical Scholarship Contest

The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program - "A Constitutional Speech Contest" is to develop a knowledge and appreciation of the United States’ Constitution on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The Contest has parts required of every student:

The Prepared Oration: a ten-minute, memorized oration on the United States Constitution with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.

The Assigned Topic: a five-minute, memorized oration on an assigned topic on a specific provision or amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
